Who We Are

Labor of Love Kitchen is a community-rooted mutual aid project committed to nourishing our neighbors with dignity, warmth, and care. Born from the belief that everyone deserves delicious food, comfort, and a space where they feel seen, our work centers the traditions of communal care passed down through Black, Nuyorican, and immigrant households.

We operate at the intersection of food justice, cultural heritage, and community love — building spaces where people can rest, reconnect, and receive support without judgment or barriers.

Our Why

We grew up in communities where a hot plate could change your whole day and where neighbors took care of each other even when resources were scarce. That legacy guides everything we do. We cook, serve, and show up because we know the power of food to heal, bring joy, and rebuild connection.

Public housing taught us resilience.

Culinary school sharpened our craft.

Community taught us purpose

Labor of Love Kitchen exists to bring all that back: one plate, event, and moment of care at a time.

WHat we do

We host community meals, care fairs, healing spaces, and seasonal events that provide:

  • Hot, culturally-rooted meals

  • Wellness and hygiene supplies

  • Mutual aid resources

  • Hair services and care offerings

  • Youth-centered support

  • Safe spaces for joy, restoration, and connection

Our events are free, accessible, and built through partnership, volunteerism, and collective effort.

Our vision

A city where community care isn’t a luxury — it’s a shared responsibility. A future where our neighbors have what they need, when they need it, without shame. A world where food brings us home to ourselves and each other.

Labor of Love Kitchen is more than a name — it’s a way of living.

  • Director of Operations and Nourishment

Mayorr B is the heart and vision behind Labor of Love Kitchen. Growing up in public housing and deeply connected to her Black Heritage and Nuyorican roots, food became a form of love, resistance, and survival.

Her culinary school training sharpened their craft, but her purpose comes from the kitchens she was raised in: where aunties fed whole blocks and everyone had a seat at the table.

As Nourishment Director, MB leads menu development, cooking, and the overall atmosphere of warmth that defines each event. Her mission is to revive the community care traditions she grew up with and use food as a pathway back to connection, dignity, and joy.

  • Director of Community Engagement & Services

Kay is the grounding presence of Labor of Love Kitchen: the first face people see, the person uplifting the room, and the steady force that keeps events running smoothly.

As Community Engagement Lead, she welcomes neighbors, builds trust, and ensures every guest feels seen and held. She manages flow during events, organizes volunteers, and helps shape the emotional tone of each gathering.

As Lead Barber, Kay brings an essential service to our community meals and care fairs. Her station is more than a haircut — it’s a moment of dignity, confidence, and connection for guests who may not otherwise have access to grooming services. Her work expands what “care” looks like in our community.

Kay’s leadership, presence, and generosity make Labor of Love Kitchen feel like home.
